Those impurities soak up the infrared energy, trapping the heat inside the glass instead of letting it fly straight toward your workpiece. The science of getting heat where it belongs We stick with 99.99% high-purity synthetic quartz because it clears out those roadblocks. Lower-grade glass has “gaps” caused by things like iron or aluminum that block specific wavelengths of IR. When you use the high-purity stuff, you get almost maximum transmittance. In plain English?
